Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter in their family. At the age of five, her carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to provide for the family. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. Following only two school years she left for an acting career. The path was difficult to pursue. Even though she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. Then, she worked as the hat checker in a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. There, she made ends meet by working as an usher in the morning, while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
